How to track your expenses

How to track your expenses monthly or weekly? Become a tracking expenses expert with this easy spreadsheet and steps. Sometimes it does sound easier than it is. For starters: what do you track? Where do you write it down and what do you do afterwards? We will start with the basics but at the end of this article you will become a pro.

Let’s start with the easy part. Write down the date, what you spend money on and how much. It will start looking something like this…

This is just the basic form. But it is a start. When you track your expenses you become more aware of where your money is going. This is important for you to see unnecessary spending behavior. Because we can all be a little uncontrollable.

Let’s up our tracking expenses game

We are going to add categories to each expense, this is how you keep track of everything more specifically. I will give you some examples:

  • Housing
  • Groceries
  • Entertainment
  • Going out to eat
  • Drinks
  • Insurance
  • Savings
  • Investments
  • Clothing
  • Presents
  • Sport
  • Shopping

In other words you can make it as interesting as you would like. And you just add a drop down menu. Now you can filter on categories or you can also use my super easy spreadsheet to help you out of course.

GOLDEN TIP: pay everything by card so you never forget to add spending to your list.

We have now founded our base: tracking. But what are we with the data without analyzing it? It is time to dig into our expenses and see where we are losing money. Is it that weekly subscription you don’t really need? Will buying in bulk reduce grocery costs? Try to look very much in detail to your expenses list.
